Check these must, must, MUST HAVES out! Italian crafted ballerina flats made by master shoemakers. YOU Khanga shoes combine African life and Italian style. Gorgeous!
Made from printed cotton in bright Kenyan Khanga, the shoes are decorated with phrases and proverbs written in Swahili. Khanga is used widely across the Equator, for clothes, hats, across the home. The material, its patterns and colours are deeply rooted in Kenyan culture.
As there is no serial processing or laser printing in Kenya, every shoe will be cut at a slightly differently, making each pair unique. Each pair of shoes also comes in its own rather cute Khanga bag. And for every sale a percentage goes to various charitable projects dedicated to women and children in Kenya such as the Asante Sana Roberto Children’s home of Mambrui. So you get to look AND feel fabulous all year round, too! Can’t say fairer than that!
The brand was started by Veruscha Rossi after moving to Malindi in Kenya in 2006 and having had two children, he returned to Italy in 2010 and decided to start making products using Khanga. Benedetta Ceppi is the creative director of YOU-Khanga. A stylist by professio, she has worked with various women’s magazines but studied Fashion in Milan. Since childhood, she has regularly visited Kenya and Malindi, where she returns at least once a year. Hence the idea of linking these two familiar worlds, Africa and Italian fashion. Very, very successfully, may we say!
You Khanga can be bought in stores all over the world. In London, head to the Kings Road, and the upmarket LEGGERA NELL’ARIA. Alternatively you can find your nearest stockist by heading to their website instead, right here, where you will also find a gorgeous selection of heels and other handmade items all designed in Khanga print too… irresistible!
