Lupita Nyong’o’s edgy shaved hairstyle was never a conscious rebel decision – but it has made the actor happier than hair ever did and shows off her exquisite complexion than a fancy hairstyle ever could.
The ’12 Years A Slave’ actor revealed that she decided to shave her locks off because she was sick of going to the hairdressers and spending time fixing her hair and focusing on her looks when she could be working on her acting instead.
She told Stylist magazine: “Shaving my head wasn’t a conscious thing – I was just tired of going to the hair salon. When I began acting, I thought it was more important to hone my craft and spirit rather than concern myself with my appearance.”
The natural Kenyan beauty has been chosen as the face of Lancôme Cosmetics and says that she loves experimenting with makeup, using bright colours to highlight her flawless dark skin. In a press statement, Lupita said,
“I am truly honoured to join the Maison Lancome, a brand with such a prestigious history and that I have always loved. I am particularly proud to represent its unique vision for women and the idea that beauty should not be dictated, but should instead be an expression of a woman’s freedom to be herself,”
“I like to experiment,” she told Stylist. “In terms of lipstick, I like bright colours like Lancôme L’Absolu in Rouge Rayonnant, especially for the red carpet.
“I’m in a place of privilege. I’m honoured to be an image that young girls of my skin colour will see and help them feel more beautiful and validated.”
Lupita shared with Stylists readers her no 1 best bit of beauty advice for darker-skinned women she had ever been given and it’s something Planetfem has also strongly advised too.
“Protect your skin from the sun,” she stressed. “As my skin is dark, it’s harder to detect a problem, but it can burn.”
