Remember the cocktail shaking cockiness of Tom Cruise in the aptly titled film, ‘Cocktail’? In reality, cocktail-making – or mixology – is an international craft and the mixologists at the top of their game are duly awarded at the annual Diageo Reserve WORLD CLASS™ Global Finals. This year, for the first time, the event will take place in Africa.
The exciting announcement was made at the WORLD CLASS™ Global Final in London on 1 August where bartenders from an impressive 48 countries competed for the title of the ‘World’s Best mixologist’.
Cape Town Executive Mayor, Patricia de Lille told Food24.com: “As the City of Cape Town we welcome the Global Finals as another addition to our events calendar as part of our efforts to secure Cape Town as the events capital of Africa. The Global Finals have been hosted by many major cities in the world and Cape Town is proud to be ranked among the best in the world. We look forward to hosting the many dynamic talents that will take part in the event.”
The competition was launched in 2009, in a successful bid to elevate the craft of bartending. Since then, it has been credited with setting international standards and trends in the cocktail world, with winners taking the international stage and being revered within the industry as if they were actors or popstars.
Last year, Charles Joly from The Aviary in Chicago was crowned World Class Bartender of the year 2014 in London. This year he will fight to retain his crown against mixologists from 48 countries, including Akash Tomar, Kenya’s no1 mixologist. Listen to him talk about his craft below.
