26-year old Wizkid is one of Naija’s fastest-rising performers, thanks to a string of massive hits including collaborations with Olamide and Akon and his gorgeous voice, of course.
So, who is this young millionaire with the sweet vocals currently owning both Naija and international charts alike?
Born Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun in 1989, this young Nigerian began his career singing in church in Lagos, known as the ‘Lil Prinz’. It was clear he was set for stardom. Not only does he sing but he writes and produces too. Ayo cut his first album at the tender age of 11 with one of Nigeria’s most prominent producers, OJB Jezreel and by 2006, he had changed his name to WizKid and was receiving regular radio-play, becoming a household name. But it was his collaboration with MC/Rappers Mi Agaba which brought Wizkid international attention in 2009 on the track, ‘Fast money, fast cars’. He signed a multi-million Naira deal with Empire Mates Enterainment (EME) owned by Bank- W.
Since then, he has become a millionaire in his own right and has been rewarded with international accolades such as a BET Award, a MOBO Award, three The Headies Awards, two Channel O Music Video Awards, four Nigeria Entertainment Awards, a Ghana Music Award, two Dynamix All Youth Awards, two City People Entertainment Awards, and a Future Award. Phew.
And it doesn’t stop there. According to Wikipedia, he has been nominated three times at the MTV Europe Music Awards as well as four times at theWorld Music Awards. He was ranked 5th on Forbes and Channel O‘s 2013 list of the Top 10 Richest/Bankable African Artists. In February 2014, Wizkid became the first ever Nigerian musician to have over 1 million followers on Twitter.
The sky is not the limit for this young performer; this kid has more wiz than a rocket. Check out his latest sexy offering, ‘ Ojuledgba’. It’s the fifth track from his latest album, ‘ Ayo’ and apparently even Alecia Keys has been seen getting down to it.
